Conforama, Europe’s largest home furnishings
Conforama is Europe’s second-largest home furnishings retail chain, with over 200 stores in France, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Luxembourg, Italy, and Croatia.
In the early 1960s, Pierre and Guy Sordoillet, Jean Moll and Jacques Ragageot, supported by furniture dealers in the North and a Bordeaux manufacturer, Charles Minvielle, created a “Carrefour of furniture” by testing a discount formula in the outbuildings of an old farm in the suburbs of Lyon. In 1967, the first Conforama was opened in Saint-Priest, Rhône, in a 2,500-square-metre industrial building.
In 1976, Agache-Willot purchased Conforama.
Following severe legal issues for the financial holding company in 1981, Pinault SA purchased Conforama in 1991. Conforama set up its first commercial website in 1998.
In March 2011, Conforama was sold by PPR to Steinhoff International for a consideration of €1.2 billion.
In March 2016, Darty announced it had agreed to be purchased by Steinhoff for £673 million. Through Conforama subsidiary Fnac, Fnac returned with a higher offer, resulting in a bidding war between Fnac and Conforama during April 2016.[7] On April 26, Conforama announced that it had dropped out of the battle for Darty. The Fnac offer was declared unconditional on July 19, 2016, thereby allowing the takeover to be completed. In September 2016, it was reported that Conforama and Casino had forged a supply-purchase cooperation agreement.
In April 2017, Conforama signed title sponsorship with France’s Ligue 1. The deal, reportedly worth €10 million a season, started in the 2017–18 season and ended in 2019–20.The next month, Conforama announced that it would take a 17% stake in the French number two online clearance retail site Showroomprivé.fr in the amount of €157.4 million. On January 11, 2018, this stake was urgently sold off on the orders of Steinhoff, which was suffering from its own accounting scandal. The proceeds of this sale to Carrefour amounted to €79 million, a loss of 50%.
Although the group had a net turnover of €3.4 billion in 2018, according to the parent company, they have accumulated losses of nearly €500 million ($564 million) since 2013. To that end, and to address the challenges in the retail sector, the company announced the departure of Frank Deshayes, general manager France, on July 9, 2019.A major restructuring plan for 2020 that was announced in July 2019 involved the closure of 32 stores, including the chain’s flagship store in Pont Neuf, and the loss of 1,900 jobs.
In late September 2019, Conforama named Marc Ténart as the new general manager of the group.Marc Ténart had formerly headed Kingfisher, the holding company of Castorama.
In July 2020, Austrian furniture retailer Lutz Group acquired the 162 French branches of Conforama through its French subsidiary BUT.
Conforama, a furniture, appliance and home decoration store, has sponsored a study of the Portuguese public and their relationship with their kitchens. Did you know 49% of the population cooks every day?
How many times have you gotten home and had no idea what to make for dinner? Have you ever really wanted to just order food straight to your home? Well, according to Conforama’s survey, carried out by market research company GfK, 48.6% of Portuguese people cook at home every day, 56.9% order home delivery around once a week, and 33.1% never do so. At the same time, 69.7% of those surveyed go out for dinner at least once a week.
27% of the public think the kitchen is the most important part of the Portuguese home, while they spend on average 95 minutes a day cooking. 46.5% think their kitchen is perfect the way it is. Men prefer having all they need at hand, while women value their storage space. That being said, according to Conforama’s study, 80% of Portuguese people would improve some aspects of their kitchen.
29% said they’d change their furniture around, 22% said they’d change the tiles, 21% would redistribute the cupboards and drawers, and 25% would just completely renovate it. In this renovation, 70% of people would like some professional help with it, and 80% would like a kitchen that’s more customised to their living space with consistent quality.
If they were able to have this complete renovation, 59% of people believe they’d cook more. In that case, the priorities would move to having an easier-to-clean, spacier kitchen with more storage space. 61.4% of the public would prefer an independent kitchen, while 45.8% would prefer a kitchen with an island in it. The younger generation has a notable preference for the latter, having a desire for a meal area in their kitchen. Older people generally like to have a more personalised kitchen, while families say they’d spend more to have up-to-date appliance technology.

How do you decorate a living room with items for the home?
To have a room worthy of a magazine cover, it is not necessary to spend a lot of money. These are the small details that make a difference, and playing with the colors and textures of items for the home is a key to success. Place a wallpaper between the sofa and the TV stand or give a modern and industrial touch to your room—play with tons of whites, colors and blacks—without ever losing your taste, adopting an elegant and imposing approach. Besides, these carpets are not used only in winter.
You will also not see this myth and use special wallpapers. Combine these with pillows of the same color as the sofa, with some blankets or sofa covers, and also play with curtains. Create a colorful triangle with these three elements. We also recommend adding a touch of greenery by including plants. Turn this space into a more harmonious and welcoming environment.
